MADISON — The Wisconsin Supreme Court today struck down Gov. Tony Evers’ statewide mask mandate, ruling the governor exceeded his authority by issuing the order.

The current mandate was set to expire Monday. The ruling has no effect on local orders requiring masks indoors.

Currently Dane County, Rock County, the city of Milwaukee, Green Bay and DePere and other municipalities have local orders requiring masks indoors. Outagamie County requires masks to be worn on county property.

The 4-3 ruling from the conservative-controlled court comes in a lawsuit that said Evers exceeded his legal authority when he extended the emergency order multiple times requiring masks.

Evers responded to the lawsuit with a tweet, “Wear a mask. Help save lives.”

However Evers could come up with a news strategy to tackle the pandemic.
