GREEN BAY — The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw arrived in northern Green Bay today through the Rock Island passage for several days of ice trials.

While in Green Bay, Mackinaw will perform a series of operational tests to evaluate and record the performance of their shipboard systems in the thick plate ice.

According to the Coast Guard, the cutter doesn’t plan to purposely interact with shore fast ice, nor enter any port, and plans to spend each night out in the ice as part of its evaluation.

Mackinaw will be operating in the vicinity of Chambers Island, remaining north and east of Green Island and west of Washington Island.

People using the ice for recreational purposes should plan their activity carefully, use caution near the ice, and remain clear of these areas.

Questions about specific questions regarding the exact timing of these events can be made by phone to the Vessel Traffic Service in Sault Ste. Marie at (906) 635-3232.
